Grammar Notes:
Counting is easy in Thai, once you learn the basic numbers 1-10. These numbers are used mostly without change to build bigger numbers. There are two exceptions to this rule. First of all, the word for twenty is yêe sìp (not sǎwng sìp ) meaning "two tens". The rest of the tens follow a logical pattern:sǎhm sìp : thirty (lit: three ten)The second exception is to use the word èt to mean one, as in "twenty-one"
sèe sìp : forty (lit: four ten)
hâh sìp : fifty (lit: five ten)and so on through ninety.
yêe sìp èt : twenty-one (lit: two ten one)...and so on, though ninety-one. You also use èt in one hundred and one, two hundred and one, and so on. To build even bigger numbers, follow the easy patterns below:
sǎhm sìp èt : thirty-one (lit: three ten one)
sèe sìp èt : forty-one (lit: four ten one)
eight hundred and seventy-nine
þàat róy jèt sìp gôw
lit: eight hundred seven ten nine
